Cisco sells Linksys unit to Belkin

Cisco Systems Inc. agreed to sell the home-networking unit that includes its well-known Linksys brand to Belkin International Inc., moving the maker of routers and switches further away from the consumer market.Privately held Belkin said it will maintain and support the Linksys brand of home and small-office networking products, acquired by Cisco almost a decade ago, as part of the deal.Terms of the deal, expected to close in March, weren't disclosed.The companies intend to develop a strategic relationship on a variety of initiatives including retail distribution, strategic marketing and products for the service provider market.Cisco bought Linksys in 2003 for $500 million worth of common stock.In November, Cisco said its fiscal first-quarter profit jumped as the network-equipment maker continued to sell routers and switches profitably despite a slump in U.S. federal spending and ongoing weakness in Europe. The company recently unveiled plans to spend $475 million to acquire Intucell, an Israel-based wireless technology company.Cisco's shares fell 0.2% to $20.97 in after-hours trading. The stock is up 39% over the past six months.
